Samsung will manufacture 7nm EUV microprocessors for IBM

IBM has just announced that it has signed an agreement with Samsung to manufacture 7-nanometer (nm) microprocessors for its CPUs.

According to IBM, Samsung will manufacture 7nm Power processors, utilizing extreme ultraviolet (EUV) process technology for IBM Power Systems, IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE high-performance computing (HPC) systems and cloud offerings.

This agreement also expands and extends the 15-year strategic process technology R&D partnership between Samsung and IBM which, as part of IBM’s Research Alliance.

“We are excited to expand our decade-long strategic relationship with IBM with our 7nm EUV process technology,” said Ryan Lee, Vice President of Foundry Marketing at Samsung Electronics.

The EUV tech helps in building more detailed semiconductor circuit pattern than the existing argon fluoride (ArF) wavelength and reduces complex multi-patterning process, securing both high performance and productivity.

The EUV technology by Samsung is expected to accelerate the growth of various products such as 5G, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT), Enterprise, Hyperscale Datacenter, Automotive, and Networking.
