Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus Tips and Tricks, the ultimate How-To guide

Settings and Features

Edge Screen





The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are equipped with Super AMOLED display that comes with default FHD+ (2220×1080) resolution and supports up to WQHD+ (2960X1440) resolution. Apart from its high resolution, the display also looks extremely beautiful and bright and takes good care of your eyes through different features.

Adjust Resolution:

To adjust the Screen Resolution, go to Settings > Display > Screen Resolution > Drag the slider on WQHD+ > tap Apply. Eventually, more resolution means more graphics process and increased battery consumption, so use it if only needed otherwise stick with the default FHD+ resolution.

Turn On Bluelight Filter:

To enable Blue light filter head back to Display Settings > Blue Light Filter > Toggle On/Off. You can also choose the opacity of the filter and the activation time.

Choose a Screen Mode:

Navigate to Settings > Display > Screen Mode, select a Screen mode that suits your eyes. You can also play with color schemes in the color balance section.

Settings and Features:


When you’re catching up on news or reading a long magazine piece, you don’t want the screen to turn off on you. Enable Smart Stay to keep you and your phone tuned in.
To enable SmartStay, Settings > Advanced features > Smart Stay > Toggle the switch to turn ON the feature.

Font and Zoom:

With Screen zoom and font settings, you can adjust the visual settings of the zooming sensitivity and the font size as well as Font style.

To customize these features, go to Settings > Display > Font and screen zoom > From here you can select Screen Zoom, Font Size of the UI, and Font Style.

Game on with Game Launcher

Game Launcher automatically arranges all your games in one place and provides additional features that are useful for playing games.

To use it, go to Settings > Advanced Features > Game > Game Launcher, Toggle the switch to Turn ON/OFF. Once it’s done the launcher will appear on the home screen.

Shift to Landscape Mode:

You can set your Galaxy S8 devices screen to landscape mode to watch your favorite videos, images, or any content you want by default it is set to OFF.

To activate this feature, go to Settings > Display > Home screen > Toggle Portrait mode only to Off and rotate the device. Now rotate the device to see the whole contents in landscape mode.

One Hand Mode:

Hands aching from all that corner-to-corner reaching? Enable one-handed mode to reduce the display size for easy corner-to-corner access.

To activate it go to Settings > Advanced Features > One-Handed Mode, Toggle to it ON or OFF > Select Gesture or Button to perform the action.

Finger Sensor Gestures:

This feature allows you to swipe down on the fingerprint sensor to lower the notification shade without having to reach to the top of your screen and same goes to swipe up for closing the notification bar.

To activate it go to Settings > Advanced Features > Finger Sensor Gestures, Toggle the switch to ON or OFF.

Try Dual Messenger:

With Dual Messenger, you can use two separate accounts for the same app. To activate it, go to Settings > Advanced Features > Dual Messenger, Toggle to turn ON or OFF.

Apps on Full-Screen Mode:

Galaxy S8 duo comes with an Infinity display, as a result, some apps don’t use the full screen and sometimes it appears with black bars on the top and the bottom. With Full-Screen Mode, you can stretch out a single app on to capture the whole screen of the S8 devices.

To make sure it is ON, Go to Settings > Display > Full-Screen Apps > Select the app that you wish to stretch out in full-screen mode from the given app list or just set it to all apps.

App Icon Badges:

Sometimes when you have a bunch of notifications in one app, some slip by unseen – like when your friend is messaging you at rapid speed in that social media app. Use app icon badges so you never miss an alert.
Whenever there’s an app notification, a badge appears on the corresponding app icon. When you dismiss the notification, the icon disappears.

To activate this feature, go to Settings > Home Screen > App icon badges > Toggle ON the switch and select a Badge style given below.

SplitScreen Multitasking / Multiwindow:

With help of SplitScreen feature, Apps that support Multi-window are displayed one on top of the other on a parallel view. You can switch between the apps, adjust the size of their display on the screen, and copy information from one app to the other.

To use two apps in split screen mode, touch Recent (located to the left side in the navigation bar by default) to launch the app in the split screen view, touch the Multi Window icon, which is located to the left of the X icon in the desired app’s window. If the Multi Window icon is not available, that app does not support split screen view.

The app is now pinned to the top window. A list of your recently used apps will be displayed in the bottom window. To open the second app in the bottom window, touch an app, or touch APP LIST to view all apps available in split screen view. Select the app you want to open as the second app.

You can also create an app pair by pressing the + icon on the toolbar or can close the split screen mode anytime by pressing the ‘X’ button.

Create App Pair:

App Pair is a convenient way to streamline your multitasking. By pairing two apps you often use together in Multi Window mode, it makes it easy to open those two apps at once from the Home screen.

To create an app pair, swipe out the Edge Panel > Tap on ‘Add’/’+’ button > Touch Create App Pair > Select the first app that’ll open on the Top and a second app that’ll be launched on the bottom in the split screen mode > Tap Done. Now you can go back to the edge panel to launch the app pair that you created.


Want to capture the screenshot? here comes the solution.

To capture a screenshot, press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time. Another way to capture screen is ‘Palm Swipe’, To use this feature make sure it is activated in Settings > Advanced Features > Toggle On/Off.

After this open, the content screen that you want to capture, place the side of the palm of your hand on the edge of the screen and swipe it across to the other end in a decent motion.

In addition, you can also take the screenshot of a scrollable content or page and to do this take a screenshot from one of the above-mentioned steps and after that, a toolbar will pop up just above the navigation bar. There, check an option called “Scroll Capture” click on that to capture screen contents in a scrollable manner.


Bixby is an intelligent interface that will help you get more out of your phone. With the new Bixby button, you will be able to conveniently access Bixby and navigate through services and apps with simple voice, touch and text commands.

You can use the Bixby by clicking the dedicated Bixby button the left side and below volume adjustment buttons or simply go to home screen and swipe it to the right.

Edge Screen:

Your Galaxy S8 and S8 plus come with an Edge screen to quickly and easily access apps, contacts, and other information. By default, Apps edge, People edge, and Smart select are turned on. To turn on other edge screens, touch settings in the edge screen and Swipe it out.

Reposition Edge Screen Handle:

You can reposition the Edge screen handle up and down the side of your screen for more convenient use.

To do this Swipe the Edge Screen Handle > Settings > More Options > Handle Settings > Select a preferable position from Left or Right.

Apps shortcuts with Apps Edge:

Access your most frequently used apps quickly via the Edge screen.
To do this Swipe the Edge Screen Handle > Tap on ‘Add’/’+’ button > Touch the app you want to add to the app edge panel. Now you can use the app that you recently added in the edge panel.

Enable/Disable Edge Panels

You can quickly access your favorite applications, features, and contacts from Edge panels and the Edge panels on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are highly customizable.

You can turn the Edge panels on or off by Opening the Edge Screen > Tap on Settings icon > Tap on the Edge panel you want to enable or disable. Other ways is by going to the Settings app > Edge screen > Edge panels > select On or Off. These panels are also editable, as well as rearrangeable.


With Galaxy S8 you can monitor your phone’s battery life and also prevent it from a quick drain. There are options that could help to achieve this goal.

To use optimize battery, Settings > Device Maintenance > Battery, here you can check your phone’s battery usage and activate the Power saving mode which allows you to extend battery life through selecting a power saving mode (OFF/MID/MAX), time of the power saving based on these three modes.

Below above-mentioned options, there’s an “App Power Monitor” feature that puts selected apps to sleep so they do not use battery power when it is not being used.


It’s better to put a screen lock to increase your phone’s security. Pattern, PIN, Password and Biometric locks provide better protection than Swipe lock and are all configured from the Screen lock type menu. Security Lock Type:

To activate these securities, Go to Settings > Lock screen and security, Here you choose the screen lock type you want to use.

Store secretly with Secure Folder:

The Secure Folder allows you to keep your private files, images, and even apps in a separate secured folder. You can store content in and out of the Secure Folder, and personalize the lock type used to access the folder.

To create a Secure Folder, go to Settings > Lock screen and security > Secure Folder. After this, you need to sign in/create a new account and after that set up a security method whether it is a Pin, Password, Fingerprint or Iris type. Congratulations your secret vault is now set to store any personal data.


In the mood for some screen decoration? Customize the themes and icons on your phone to your taste. You can change the wallpaper, adjust icons, and download themes to your phone. In addition, you can also customize and add options like a widget to your Lock Screen alongside Always on Display feature.

Download and Apply: Theme, wallpaper, icons, and AODs:

To download a theme, Go to your Home screen, touch and hold an empty area, and then touch Themes. Select the desired theme, view the details, hit download and then tap APPLY. This process goes the same for downloading Icons, Wallpapers, and AODs.

Customize: Always on Display, Clock Styles and Facewidgets:

Always On Display: This feature allows you to take a glance access to the time, calendar, notifications and more, all without unlocking your phone. Moreover, it’s fully customizable.

To activate Always On Display: Go to Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Always On Display > Toggle the switch to turn Always On Display ON or OFF. To show the Home button and a clock or information on the standby screen, select the Home button and clock.

Clock Style: You can customize the clock’s color and style that will appear on the AOD such as – horizontal, digital, analog, even a world clock or photo can be displayed.

Follow these steps and never ask for the time again. Go to Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Clock and FaceWidgets. Touch Clock style, and then select the desired Clock style or color.

Face Widgets: With this Facewidgets, you can get quick access to useful information on the lock screen/Always On Display, even when you’re using a secure screen lock type.

To use face widgets, Go to Settings > Lock Screen and Security > Clock and FaceWidgets > FaceWidgets. Select Face Widgets and you can also position of the Facewidgets. Moreover, you can also rearrange the order of facewidgets from top to bottom.

Customize Navigation Bar:

The Navigation bar on your phone gets you where you need to go, and you can make it work for you even more. Make the background your favorite color, or rearrange the button order if it’s not to your liking. Any way you want it, you got it

Go to Settings > Display > Navigation Bar, here you can customize the navigation bar.

Light up with Edge Lighting

When the device faced down, the edge lighting feature lights up the edge screen when you receive calls or notifications. You can color code up to five contacts that will appear in their respective colors when they get in touch, while all other calls or notifications will be shown in the neutral bright light.

Note: Edge lighting won’t work if notifications are turned off in the app’s settings. Depending on the app and notification type, some notifications may not cause the Edge screen to light up.

To customize Edge lighting, go to Settings > Display > Edge Screen > Edge Lighting > tap on Edge lighting style, from here you select effects, transparency and the width of the edge lighting.

Customize HomeScreen:

When it comes to your Home screen, customization is the name of the game. You can change it up by switching the layout, resizing the grid, and you can even bring back the old All Apps button. So, you get to do you.

  • Home screen layout: You can choose to remove the separate Apps page. All of your apps will be added to a Home screen.
  • Home screen grid: You can change the grid structure of the Home screen. The available settings are 4×5, 4×6, and 5×5.
  • Apps screen grid: Choose a dimension option to determine how icons are arranged on the Apps screen. The numbers indicate how many icons can be placed horizontally by how many icons can be placed vertically.
  • Apps button: You can add the old All Apps button to the Home screen. This will replace the right button on the bottom of the Home screen.
  • Hide apps: You can hide the apps what you want.
